Top Free Citation Sources

I read an article a while back from Search Engine Land where they studied over a million citation sources.

A citation is basically a place where your business name, address and phone number are listed somewhere out there on the interwebs.

And it is one of the most important things you need to be doing as a business owner when it comes to marketing your business online.

In fact, when a group of the top search engine marketers in the world were surveyed they said “number of citations” is one of the top 5 most important things you need to do to get better rankings.

So where do you get these citations?

And how many of them should you get?

From the million that they studied they boiled it down to the top 50 citations in the US.  You can actually read the article here yourself.   And they were nice enough to separate it between Free & Paid for citations.

I went through the list and separated the top Free citation sites and I focused primarily on directory type of sites.  You have a few other choices in the top 50 like event sites, and niche directories but I didn’t think they were necessary for what we are doing in building citations.

So here is the list….the top 14 Free Citation sources:

  • yelp.com
  • superpages.com
  • yellowbot.com
  • yellowpages.com
  • hotfrog.com
  • magicyellow.com
  • yellowusa.com
  • yellowpages.aol.com
  • insiderpages.com
  • manta.com
  • yp.com
  • kudzu.com
  • yell.com
  • yellowbook.com

At a bare minimum you should create a business listing on every one of these sites. It’s only 14 of them!

But for this to work right, you need to use the exact same business name, address and phone number (NAP) on every single listing.  Don’t change a thing.  Just do it the exact same way every time.
